But as the Coronavirus appears on the back foot, it\u2019s a good moment to take stock of the damage it\u2019s done and consider <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomerang.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-volunteer-engagement-using-financials\/\">the financial opportunities of volunteer re-engagement<\/a> and new funding currently available.<\/p>\n<h2 data-fontsize=\"32\" data-lineheight=\"35.2px\">The challenge of human resources: volunteer re-engagement<\/h2>\n<p>A recent study by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fidelitycharitable.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fidelity Charitable<\/a> \u2013 the USA\u2019s biggest grantmaking public charity \u2013 reported that two out of three volunteers had reduced or halted their participation at a nonprofit to which before <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomerang.com\/topic\/covid-19\/\">COVID-19<\/a> , they\u2019d previously offered their time.<\/p>\n<p>The good news was that the survey indicated seventy-five percent of those questioned who stated they had pulled away from their pre-pandemic volunteering roles, were aiming to get back to the grindstone, once life returned to normality.<\/p>\n<h2 data-fontsize=\"32\" data-lineheight=\"35.2px\">A renewed focus on wellbeing and retention for volunteer re-engagement<\/h2>\n<p>A pre-pandemic study by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Urban Institute<\/a> \u2013 a research center based in Washington DC \u2013 also found eighty percent of nonprofits relied on volunteers, but did not have the knowledge to engage and adequately manage them effectively.<\/p>\n<p>This shortfall of <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomerang.com\/volunteer\/\">volunteer management<\/a> is an area worth attention now, especially in light of the two-thirds of volunteers having stepped away from their previous nonprofit duties. I\u2019ve added an extra few cost-free ideas to help <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomerang.com\/blog\/tips-to-attract-and-retain-skilled-volunteers-that-grow-your-nonprofit\/\">manage volunteer re-engagement<\/a> at this critical time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Formal volunteer retraining:<\/strong> Having a system created to help guide the volunteer into the ways and methods of your nonprofit. A booklet or PDF created to help inform the volunteer on the general background and vision of your organization. Plus giving them an idea of where volunteers can constantly make the most impact.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Being specific about the individual: <\/strong>Sending the volunteer general emails about donor drives that go out to everyone, undermines the personal relationship between your nonprofit and those working within it. Make sure the volunteer communications are something unique and personalized to them, avoiding the generic. A small personal touch is an appropriate reminder of how valued they are.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Teamwork and vision:<\/strong> Giving the volunteer a chance to feel fully engaged as part of something bigger.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Renewed efforts should be taken to keep individual volunteers included and valued within the whole team now. Try implementing paid\/non-paid staff brainstorming meetings\/Zoom calls. They offer the volunteer a sense of friendship alongside their service. This is a great way to ensure long-term volunteer re-engagement and loyalty to the nonprofit&#8217;s vision.<\/p>\n<h2 data-fontsize=\"32\" data-lineheight=\"35.2px\">Rebuilding the financial base: resource opportunities for post-pandemic grants<\/h2>\n<p>The pain of the pandemic has been crippling to many. Reading the headlines it seems that the government has stepped in to help the nonprofit sector survive. But many cross-state surveys indicate governmental funding has been no more than one-fifth of overall need.<\/p>\n<p>A typical example comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/calnonprofits.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Calnonprofits<\/a>, the association for Californian nonprofits.<\/p>\n<p>Their survey reported that only thirteen percent of charities they contacted had raised twenty percent or more from government pandemic aid during this difficult period. That\u2019s barely one in ten.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, there are other multiple opportunities for support both inside and outside the US to explore. Here\u2019s a useful list of resources and access points to help your nonprofit today.<\/p>\n<h2 data-fontsize=\"32\" data-lineheight=\"35.2px\">Grant opportunities for U.S. based nonprofits<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commfoundations.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Community Foundation Public Awareness Initiative<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/a>Offering a state-by-state guide to community foundation grant programs.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CARES_Act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>(CARES) Coronavirus Aid, Relief, And Economic Security Act<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/a>Initiative for nonprofits and businesses both at federal and state levels.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.philanthropy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Chronicle Of Philanthropy<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/a>Detailing funding for pandemic relief grants.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncfp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>National Center For Family Philanthropy<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/a>Recovery and emergency financial resources for projects and nonprofits with a focus on community or with a social justice angle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-fontsize=\"32\" data-lineheight=\"35.2px\">Global funding (including USA)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genglobal.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Global Entrepreneurship Network<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/a>A major aid hub for business and go-getting nonprofit leaders, detailing help available depending on location.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbenc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Women\u2019s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC)<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/a>Useful information for grants and assistance for female-led businesses and nonprofits.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/grantstation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Grantstation<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/a>Hundreds of emergency aid resources for nonprofits and businesses.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedway.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>United Way<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/a>International support for communities and organizations that are affected by the pandemic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although there is some light at the end of the tunnel, there is still a way to go.
