Dear Charity Clairity,<\/em>
\nOur board doesn\u2019t want to \u201cfundraise\u201d because they think asking is icky. What are some ways to get them involved that don\u2019t (yet) involve asking, but that warm them up to the idea donors actually LIKE our organization and APPRECIATE the opportunity to get more engaged. I\u2019ve been telling them this, but they don\u2019t seem to believe me. Do you have any actionable tips for board members \u2013 like assignments I might make — that wouldn\u2019t make them run for the hills?<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2014 They Just Won\u2019t Fundraise<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Dear \u201cThey Just Won\u2019t Fundraise,\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

You\u2019re not alone. \u201cOur board won\u2019t help\u201d is easily one of the top three frustrations we hear from fundraisers and executive directors.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the plot twist: the number one<\/em> complaint we hear from board members is, \u201cStaff never give us anything to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a pretty big disconnect\u2014especially when it comes to one of the most essential responsibilities of a board: making sure the organization has the resources it needs to fulfill its mission.<\/p>\n

Like you, we talk about this all the time. (And yes, we\u2019ve written about it here<\/a>, here<\/a>, and here<\/a>.) Yet somehow, the gap between staff and boards persists.<\/p>\n

So where does the disconnect begin?<\/h2>\n

We\u2019ll be honest\u2014it usually starts with staff.<\/p>\n

In our very human attempt to be \u201cnice\u201d during board recruitment, we often skip the hard but necessary conversations. The result? Board members who care deeply about the mission, but aren\u2019t prepared for their fiduciary role<\/a>\u2014especially when it comes to fundraising.<\/p>\n

So let\u2019s pause and ask:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Do you talk openly about fundraising responsibilities during the recruitment process?<\/li>\n
  2. Is fundraising included in your board member job descriptions?<\/li>\n
  3. Does your board orientation session<\/a> clearly cover their role in fund development?<\/li>\n
  4. Do you offer ongoing board development to help members serve as ambassadors, advocates, and\u2014eventually\u2014askers<\/a>?<\/li>\n
  5. Are you providing the encouragement, clarity, and cheerleading they need along the way?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Why are board members so afraid of fundraising?<\/h2>\n

    Most people are afraid of asking.<\/p>\n

    To many board members, it feels like begging\u2014and that\u2019s uncomfortable. Add to that our cultural reluctance to talk about money at all<\/a>, and suddenly \u201cfundraising\u201d becomes the thing they\u2019ll avoid at all costs.<\/p>\n

    They\u2019ll gladly help in a hundred other ways\u2014just not with that \u201cyucky\u201d word that starts with fund<\/em>.<\/p>\n

    What\u2019s often missing is this simple truth: fundraising isn\u2019t just asking. It\u2019s a relationship-driven process that includes identifying supporters, nurturing connections, stewarding generosity, and yes\u2014sometimes inviting someone to give.<\/p>\n

    The key is to start with what feels natural and build confidence from there.<\/p>\n

    How to take the \u201cyuck\u201d out of fundraising<\/h2>\n

    First:<\/strong> Try reframing it.<\/p>\n

    What if, instead of \u201cfundraising,\u201d we talked about philanthropy facilitation<\/em><\/a>? Same goal. Very different feeling. It replaces the dreaded four-letter word with something far more meaningful: philos<\/em> + anthropy<\/em>\u2014love of humanity.<\/p>\n

    Next:<\/strong> Give board members options.<\/p>\n

    Create a menu of specific ambassador and advocate roles they can choose from. Ask them to indicate what they\u2019re comfortable doing, then meet one-on-one to assign roles, answer questions, and set them up for success.<\/p>\n

    Here are a few easy, confidence-building ways board members can get involved:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Say thank you.<\/strong>
      \nWriting notes, sending emails, signing letters, or       making gratitude calls<\/a> (even leaving a warm voicemail) helps board members connect with supporters\u2014and experience the joy of appreciation firsthand.<\/li>\n
    2. Open doors.<\/strong>
      \nBoard members can introduce people from their networks who might be a good fit, often by helping schedule a friendly visit with the executive director or another leader.<\/li>\n
    3. Add personal notes.<\/strong>
      \nOne of the simplest, most meaningful tasks: reviewing a donor list, flagging familiar names, and       adding a handwritten note<\/a> to an appeal, invitation, or thank-you.<\/li>\n
    4. Guide a tour.<\/strong>
      \nIf you have a space people love to see\u2014backstage, a campus, a pantry, a preserve\u2014this is a no-pressure way to welcome supporters and share impact.<\/li>\n
    5. Bring a guest.<\/strong>
      \nInviting friends to an event or tour is a powerful act of advocacy. It feels good, personal, and generous\u2014because it is.<\/li>\n
    6. Host a house party.<\/strong>
      \nThese gatherings harness the power of social proof. The board member becomes a trusted advocate, and guests get an up-close look at the mission\u2014through stories, experiences, and human connection.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Finally:<\/strong> Check in.<\/p>\n

      This isn\u2019t their day job. Don\u2019t assume tasks will magically happen without a nudge or two. Ongoing encouragement and clarity go a long way.<\/p>\n

      Here\u2019s the good news: board members will<\/em> fundraise when they understand their options, feel supported, and aren\u2019t forced into roles that don\u2019t fit.<\/p>\n

      Your job isn\u2019t to strong-arm them\u2014it\u2019s to help them feel good about helping.<\/p>\n

      When board members facilitate generosity, they\u2019re not asking for money. They\u2019re offering people the chance to do something meaningful, aligned with their values, and deeply human.<\/p>\n

      That\u2019s not yucky. That\u2019s joyful.<\/p>\n
