While you can\u2019t change a donor lacking the financial resources to give, you can change EVERYTHING else. Four of these five reasons donors stop giving are 100% in your control.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the solution?\u00a0 It\u2019s shockingly simple &#8211; <a href=\"\/blog\/donor-stewardship\/\">stewardship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Only stewardship can build a donor\u2019s trust and confidence that you used their gift wisely, make them feel connected to you, and ensure positive experiences. Stewardship also prevents donors from ever feeling like you\u2019re asking too frequently. If you properly steward your donors, there\u2019s no such thing as giving fatigue.<\/p>\n<p>Stewardship should be viewed as a revenue center and not a cost center because it\u2019s cheaper to keep your existing donors than to acquire new ones.<\/p>\n<p>Roger Craver, author of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Retention-Fundraising-Science-Keeping-Donors\/dp\/1889102539\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Retention Fundraising<\/a><\/em>, breaks down nonprofit donor retention rates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>60-70% chance of acquiring an additional gift from an existing donor.<\/li>\n<li>20-40% chance of obtaining an additional contribution from a recently lapsed donor.<\/li>\n<li>Less than 2% chance of receiving a donation from a prospect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to keep donors loyal for life<\/h2>\n<p>If you want donors to stick to you like glue, you need to craft a stewardship plan\u2014essentially a set of business rules for donor engagement\u2014that outlines key actions, like thank-you phone calls, and assigns responsibility to specific staff members, such as the Development Director or Executive Director.<\/p>\n<p>You can download this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachelmuir.com\/stewardship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free stewardship template<\/a> to get started.<\/p>\n<p>Be careful NOT to organize your stewardship efforts by the amount of a donor\u2019s gift. Instead, organize your stewardship around the donor\u2019s longevity\u2014are they a new donor, a monthly donor, or a returning lapsed donor?<\/p>\n<p>The greatest gift you can give your donors is the gift of being known by you, so all your communications need to show them that you know who they are. New donors should get a new donor welcome call and a new donor thank-you that calls them out as such, for example:<\/p>\n<p><i>Dear John,<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>I\u2019m overjoyed to see such a generous first-time gift from you and am honored to welcome you into our donor family.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to new donors, you need to roll out the red carpet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachelmuir.com\/stewardship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as this template shows<\/a>. Warmly welcome new donors and set the expectation that they\u2019re part of something special.<\/p>\n<p>New monthly donors should get a monthly donor welcome kit and an end-of-year appeal that celebrates them for being monthly donors.<\/p>\n<p>Lapsed donors should get a lased donor welcome back thank-you call and thank-you letter that celebrates their return, as seen in the postcard screenshot below:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-123885 aligncenter\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Image-2025-02-21-at-12.27.22-PM.jpeg\" alt=\"why donors stop giving and how to win them back\" width=\"372\" height=\"256\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next up?
