A time when many nonprofits raise 25-50% of their entire budget.<\/p>\n<p>But I\u2019m guessing your inbox was flooded with emails last year for Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and GivingTuesday (me too).<\/p>\n<p>Do you remember any emails that stood out? The ones that intrigued you enough to click them?<\/p>\n<p>I do, and I\u2019ve shared five of my <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomerang.com\/blog\/the-best-giving-tuesday-email-subject-lines-of-2022\/\">favorite GivingTuesday subject lines<\/a> below:<\/p>\n<h4>You&#8217;ve got that GivingTuesday Glow!<\/h4>\n<p>My friends at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magicwheelchair.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Magic Wheelchair<\/a> are total pros at building show-stopping costumes for kids in wheelchairs\u2014and they get it: a little flattery goes a long way to getting those fundraising emails opened.<\/p>\n<h4>If you were waiting for the most impactful moment to donate, this is it<\/h4>\n<p>Look at this from <a href=\"https:\/\/support.savethechildren.org\/site\/Donation2?df_id=7708&amp;mfc_pref=T&amp;7708.donation=form1&amp;monthly=false&amp;cid=Email:SFMC:GT_FR:Non_Donors_h:112922&amp;smtrctid=30090593\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Save the Children<\/a>! They included a countdown to reach their match goal, along with a powerful image of a child looking straight at the camera. It\u2019s direct, it\u2019s moving, and it pulls you right in. Well done!<\/p>\n<h4>We\u2019re $690 away from crossing the finish line<\/h4>\n<p>There\u2019s nothing quite like that last push\u2014the excitement of supporters coming together to help you cross the finish line. That\u2019s what happened for my friends at <a href=\"https:\/\/lovenotlost.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Love Not Lost<\/a>. They were just within reach of their $30,000 goal and sent an update email Wednesday morning, inviting everyone to help get them there. They didn\u2019t just hit the target\u2014they soared past it, raising $31,150!<\/p>\n<h4><strong>s\u00a0 t\u00a0 r\u00a0 e\u00a0 t\u00a0 c\u00a0 h\u00a0 goal for koalas! \ud83d\udc28\ud83d\udc28<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>My fundraising bestie, copywriting dynamo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundraisingwriting.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Julie Cooper<\/a>, shared this little gem. They\u2019re a fun way to break through the clutter in a crowded, ho-hum inbox.<\/p>\n<h4>GivingTuesday is Here and Queer!<\/h4>\n<p>My friend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goalbusters.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim Anderson<\/a> shared this subject line winner from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wayout.lgbt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This Way Out LGBTQ<\/a>, and it made us both want to stand up and cheer!<\/p>\n<p>If donors aren\u2019t opening your emails, you have one thing to blame: your subject line. <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomerang.com\/blog\/nonprofits-dont-be-lazy-with-your-email-subject-lines\/\">A bad subject line<\/a> will tank your appeal. Even the greatest appeal can\u2019t overcome a weak subject line.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m here to help you stand out in a crowded inbox and write <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomerang.com\/blog\/eight-point-checklist-for-stellar-givingtuesday-subject-lines\/\">click-worthy subject lines<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomerang.com\/blog\/email-marketing-your-fundraising-starting-point\/\">fundraising emails<\/a> just in time for GivingTuesday and end-of-year fundraising.<\/p>\n<h2>Five takeaways, tips &amp; tools to get noticed at end-of-year fundraising<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>To make your email pop in a busy email inbox, try leaving GivingTuesday out of the subject line. Of the 79 emails I got last year on GivingTuesday, 50 used GivingTuesday in the subject line. You\u2019ll stand out much better if you don\u2019t.<\/li>\n<li>Pro-tip: Save this blog and use these top-performing subject lines for fundraising emails in your next campaign. Even better? Start a \u201cSubject lines\u201d Google doc with them and add your highest performing subject lines (psst, I do this too and have 384 subject lines in mine). Trust me, future you will be writing emails in record time!<\/li>\n<li>Test your email subject lines with a free tool like <a href=\"https:\/\/sendcheckit.com\/email-subject-line-tester?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Send Check It<\/a> (add the link to your bookmarks toolbar). It\u2019ll rate your email based on grade level, scannability, length, and spammy words\u2014and even give you tips to improve it!<\/li>\n<li>Increase your email open rates by sending more frequently. Your donor does not read every <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/fundraising-email-essentials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fundraising email<\/a> you send. So, send more.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Real talk: The average nonprofit has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.causevox.com\/blog\/nonprofit-email-open-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">26% open rate<\/a>, which means 74% of your donors aren\u2019t reading your email. (If it helps you feel better, commercial open rates are only about 6%.) Maybe you feel like you\u2019re bombarding your donors with multiple emails. I\u2019ve been there. By the time you\u2019re on your 3rd, 5th, or 11th email appeal, you start wondering, \u201cIs everyone on my list ready to throw rocks at me?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They don\u2019t. If they did, they\u2019d unsubscribe, and that\u2019s okay, too!<\/p>\n<p>Still sweating sending multiple email appeals? Here\u2019s a stat to ease your mind, dear fundraiser: the average nonprofit sends around <a href=\"https:\/\/mrbenchmarks.com\/#email-messaging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eight emails in December<\/a> alone.<\/p>\n<p>Look, donors will only open emails with a subject line that interests them. They\u2019ll only give to asks that compel them to take action. Your donors are busy and you need to overcommunicate with them during this busy season. I guarantee the nonprofits raising 50% of their annual operating budget at the end of the year are sending more than a few emails!<\/p>\n<p>5. Experiment with personalization in your subject line to increase open rates.<\/p>\n<p>Personalized emails tend to have 29% higher open rates than others. That\u2019s obvious since everyone loves it when you address them personally. Remember that personalization requires you to know your constituent\u2019s first name so be thoughtful with what you use as a custom text field if their first name is blank.<\/p>\n<p>Need a hand with your fundraising, subject lines, emails, and appeals?
